How to Search Civil Dockets
Xchange: Public Case Search is the statewide index that opens public Morgan County civil court dockets. Pick District Court for contracts, debt collection, tort, property, eviction, domestic, probate, and judgment cases. Pick Justice Court for small claims. Search the wrong level? A valid Morgan County case can seem to vanish for that simple reason.
Know the case number? Use it exactly. Numbers are not unique statewide, so keep the Morgan location attached. For a name search, enter the last name or business name as it was filed, then add a first name, case type, or date range to narrow common names. A trailing wildcard catches middle names, initials, and suffixes. Xchange caps broad results, so scoping to the right court and county saves searches.
- Choose District Court or Justice Court based on the civil case type.
- Set the search scope to Morgan County or the specific Morgan court.
- Enter the case number, party name, or business name.
- Open the linked case number and read the extended case history.
- Use the calendar for settings and the holding clerk for an official copy.
Morgan Civil Search Wildcards
Xchange indexes names as they appeared in the original filing. A person may carry a middle initial or suffix. A company may appear under its formal legal name. When you need a wider net, the official search instructions recommend a trailing asterisk. Start with the last name alone, then layer in the first name and Morgan County scope.
Case type is a strong second filter. It separates debt collection from probate or domestic matters with one click. Skip the birth date unless results need pruning apart. Parties searching their own case should try MyCourtCase, which gives free linked access to eligible histories, documents, payments, notices, and filings. It is separate from the general public index.
What a Civil Docket Shows
Open a Morgan County civil case history. The top shows the court, caption, case number, filing date, case type, status, and assigned judge. The docket then names each party and that party's role. From there, entries trace the complaint or petition, the answer, service, motions, notices, hearings, minute entries, orders, judgment, and satisfaction. They close with the disposition. Electronically filed district records can also show purchase links for public documents.
| Case Number | The Utah identifier, with filing year in its first two digits and Morgan court needed for context. |
|---|---|
| Parties | Plaintiff and defendant, or petitioner and respondent, plus other coded roles. |
| Filings | Complaint, petition, answer, notices, service records, and motions when public. |
| Settings | Date, time, setting type, judicial officer, room, and hearing mode. |
| Orders | Rulings, decrees, minute entries, and letters of appointment when public. |
| Judgment | Entered judgment and later satisfaction or disposition information. |
Remember what a docket is. It is an index and activity summary, not the paper itself. A purchased pleading or judgment is the actual filed document. Neither counts as certified until the clerk certifies it.
Morgan Civil Filings by Numbers
Morgan District Court's FY2023 report logged 108 general-civil filings against 92 dispositions. That is an 85 percent clearance rate. Debt collection drove most of that volume with 95 filings and 80 dispositions. Contracts contributed seven filings. Civil rights, civil stalking, contract or fraud, administrative-agency, and miscellaneous cases rounded out the smaller categories.
Those figures describe one fiscal year of Morgan County workflow. They say nothing about how any single suit turned out. Domestic, probate, property, tort, eviction, and judgment activity appear in separate parts of the same report.
Types of Civil Cases on the Docket
Morgan County District Court holds broad civil jurisdiction. Its published categories show why a precise case type matters in any docket search. Domestic cases share the same district court but carry stronger privacy limits. Small claims belong to Morgan County Justice Court instead.
- Contracts, debt collection, civil rights, fraud, and other general civil claims
- Property rights, eviction, automobile tort, and personal injury matters
- Divorce, custody and support, paternity, and protective-order proceedings
- Probate estates, guardianships, trusts, and name changes
- Judgment records, tax liens, workforce liens, and abstracts of judgment
Morgan County civil dockets cover a wide mix of matters. For FY2023, the county report counted 55 domestic filings, 25 probate filings, eight property-rights filings, three tort filings, and two evictions, and the judgment index tracks judgment entries separately from those new cases.
Morgan Small Claims Court Split
Small claims belong in Morgan County Justice Court. That applies when the defendant lives in the county or the debt arose there. The local court states that claims seek actual damages and may not exceed $11,000. In Xchange, search under Justice Court. A district-only search will miss this Morgan County civil docket entirely.
| Route | Court | Typical record |
|---|---|---|
| Small claim | Morgan County Justice Court | Claim, service, trial setting, judgment |
| General civil | Second District Court | Complaint, motions, orders, judgment |
| Small-claims appeal | Second District Court | Trial de novo record |
Filing tiers run $60, $100, or $185 depending on the claim amount, plus a $10 processing fee. Forms cost $1 from the court or come free from Utah Courts. The plaintiff handles service, and the trial date is set once the case is filed.
Settings and Hearings on Civil Dockets
A civil docket setting tells you why the parties must come to court. Morgan District calendar cards can list the date, time, hearing mode, court, physical location, caption, judge or commissioner, courtroom, setting type, case number, and case type. Civil settings observed on these dockets include motion hearings, divorce matters, protective-order hearings, temporary protective orders, and motions to enforce.
The court sits in the Second Judicial District. A Morgan County caption can therefore carry a hearing location note for Morgan or Ogden. Read the whole card before you drive anywhere. Virtual and hybrid labels matter just as much. The current Utah Court Calendar refreshes on weekdays, but if sources conflict, the court's notice and clerk confirmation control.
A continuance only moves a setting; it never dismisses the claim. Check the case history for the continuance order or event. Then look up the new date. District scheduling questions go to 385-350-9170 or 2ndmorganteam@utcourts.gov.
Morgan Civil Party Codes
Role codes describe how a person or entity participates in a Morgan County civil case. They are not outcome codes. Expect labels that differ from plain plaintiff and defendant, especially in probate or domestic matters.
- PLA / DEF
- Plaintiff and defendant in an ordinary civil dispute.
- PET / RES
- Petitioner and respondent in a petition-based case.
- GAL
- Guardian ad litem, appointed to represent specified interests.
- GAR / GRD
- Garnishee and garnishee defendant in collection activity.
- CON / HER
- Conservator and heir in probate-related records.
A Morgan County civil docket can also tag people as intervenor, guardian, decedent, or other party, so read the caption and case type alongside the code before drawing any conclusion. A role label alone never settles liability.
Public Access to Civil Dockets
Utah keeps its civil docket records open by default. Under UCJA 4-202.02, court records are public unless a rule classifies them otherwise, and UCJA 4-202.03 lets any person view a public record. Sealed, private, and protected material stays restricted, and even public copies may have personal identifiers redacted.
Domestic record distinction: some divorce, custody, paternity, guardianship, and related case records are private. Public hearing minutes, judgments, orders, decrees, and letters of appointment can remain public unless a judicial order restricts them.
Morgan County gives the public several ways in. Xchange covers the index, the statewide calendar shows hearing settings, and MyCourtCase serves eligible parties. You can also visit the courthouse terminal or counter, or reach the district team by phone or email. Need certified copies, older files, or something not online? Send a written Request for a Court Record to the court that holds the file. Looking at a docket costs nothing. Copies and staff time may carry a charge.
Morgan Judgments Beyond Xchange
Judgment records go beyond Xchange, too. The Morgan judgment archive posts dated ZIP packages of judgment PDFs. Its file guidance matches documents by the first four digits of a case number. Treat what you download as filed material only. A ZIP listing or PDF from the archive is not clerk certification.
Weekly District Case Reports offer another public extract. They list prior-week filings and judgment dispositions, with fields like case type, case number, location, filing date, disposition date, party role, and judgment code. Older Morgan County court records may also sit with Utah State Archives. For a certified copy today, though, only the court clerk can provide one.
For a certified order or decree: identify the Morgan court, case number, document name, and date; state the desired format; then send the written request to the holding clerk.
